I’m a dinosaur!  I feel out of place in today’s culture.  When I was young, I used to be able to go into a store and buy products made in America, knowing that I could depend on that product to have a reasonably long life expectancy.  Things have changed, and I don’t like it!  For example, several months ago I bought three little plug-in emergency lights (made in China, to be sure) from WalMart, took them home, and plugged them in.  About two months later, I checked them and none of them worked!  Also, they were made in such a way that you can’t change the battery!  Nothing to do but just throw them away.

Another example – I had a metal leaf rake made in the US that served me well for many years.  Finally it gave up the ghost, so I went looking for another one.  I couldn’t find a metal one, only plastic ones made in China, so I bought one.  Now I have to buy about one a year because they just don’t last!  Sure, they have a cheap price tag, but when you average the cost out over the life of the rake, they wind up being more expensive per year than the metal rake!

Thankfully, there are still some vestiges of the old “quality” culture left.  Last time I checked, Sears’ Craftsman hand tools were still made in America and had an unlimited lifetime warranty.  Guess where I buy my tools!
